Top Signs You Need New Tyres Immediately

Most drivers don't think about their tyres until something goes wrong — but a few simple checks can tell you whether you're due for a replacement before it becomes a safety issue.

1. Tread depth below 1.5mm

New Zealand's legal minimum tread depth is 1.5mm. Use the 20-cent coin test: insert a coin into the tread groove — if you can see the rim of the coin above the tread, you're close to or below the legal limit.

2. Uneven wear across the tyre

Wear that's heavier on one edge, in the centre, or in patches usually points to incorrect tyre pressure, poor wheel alignment, or a suspension issue — not just tyre age.

3. Visible cracks in the sidewall

Cracking (sometimes called "weather checking") happens as rubber ages, even on tyres with plenty of tread left. It's a sign the rubber compound is breaking down and losing grip and structural integrity.

4. Bulges or blisters

A bulge means the internal structure of the tyre has been damaged, often from hitting a pothole or kerb. This is a safety risk and the tyre should be replaced immediately, not monitored.

5. Vibration while driving

Vibration that wasn't there before can indicate internal tyre damage, wheel balance issues, or uneven wear — worth getting checked promptly.

6. Tyres older than 6–10 years

Even with tread remaining, rubber degrades with age and UV exposure. If your tyres are original to a vehicle that's 6+ years old, it's worth having them inspected even if they look fine.

7. Frequent pressure loss

Needing to top up air more than usual can point to a slow puncture, valve issue, or a tyre nearing the end of its usable life.

8. Poor grip in the wet

If braking distances feel longer or the car feels less stable in rain than it used to, worn tread is a likely cause — wet grip is one of the first things to go as tread depth decreases.

9. Noise that's changed or increased

A tyre that's suddenly noisier on the same roads you always drive can indicate uneven wear or internal damage.

10. It's simply been a while since you checked

Many drivers go years without a proper tyre inspection. A quick check takes a few minutes and can catch a problem well before it becomes a breakdown or a safety hazard.
